Newborn baby photography is one of my favourite things to do in the world. There are a few things to keep in mind, to get wonderful images of your newborn baby that you’ll love to return to forever! The first days of being a new parent can of course be chaotic. That’s why it’s best to book your session before you give birth - newborn photography is all about timing, and once your little package of joy arrives, you’ll be occupied by other things!
With newborn sessions, for that fresh-out-the-wrapper newborn look, it’s best to photograph your baby up to three weeks old - and the sooner the better. Your baby will change so much every day, which is why it’s such a good idea to plan the shoot in advance. We’ll do it at your own home, and I’ll bring everything I need, from props to studio equipment - all you need to do is be home and have a baby!

Don’t worry, it happens! With babies 4-8 weeks old we still have a great chance for a few newborn-looking images, but there will be new beauty to capture no matter your baby’s age. During that 4-8 week phase, babies are already smiling on purpose, maintaining eye contact with parents, even turning and lifting heads! Alternatively, we can postpone your session until around 6 months of age - that’s when babies look their most Michelin Man! So there are plenty of options.
I have experience with everything! I’ve photographed many newborn twins, and you can see examples of those shoots in my portfolio. I’ve also photographed newborn twins with older siblings who were also twins - top that!
There are matters of the heart and matters of the head here. Practical stuff first: you should check out my blog post about how to prepare your home and what to do on the morning before your session. And as for matters of the heart: your baby reflects your feelings, and while it’s hard to turn off nerves, if you can relax and trust me, your baby will feel that energy and be more relaxed too. I’ve handled more than six hundred newborns. View full post
The best time to book is around two months before your due date. This gives you time to still consider a belly session, as well as enough time to meet with me and discuss your wishes and ideas. But if you already have a baby in your arms and you just decided to have the session, don’t be afraid to call - I will always try to accommodate!
Yes! I have photographed births before (through tears in my eyes!) and it’s always a wonderful experience. Absolutely, get in touch and we’ll make it happen!
Ideally within 48 hours so we can get it scheduled in as early as possible. I photograph newborn sessions on weekdays during morning hours.
I love working with children, and they all have completely different personalities. Whether your older kids are wild or shy, they’ll be a joy to work with I’m sure. I’ve gone through Playful Heart photography training specifically for working with children in photography. Your newborn’s safety is our primary concern on the shoot, so I won’t push your older child to hold the baby, or pose for any images that might make the baby uncomfortable.
Yes! I have an online course for parents called How To Photograph Your Baby’s first year - focusing on capturing all of the big firsts that your baby goes through, from smiling, eating, finding hands and feet, sitting, crawling, to first steps and first birthday. All you’ll need is a baby and a phone. View Course
Yes, as soon as the COVID situation will allow visits in the newborn department in hospitals, I will be back with Fresh 48 sessions.

“The days just fly by with the little one. Now he's already over 4kg and lost all the squishiness he still had in these photos. We couldn't be happier to have these wonderful photos to remember that short time when he was just a small “myttynen”. I've been crying a little looking at these as he's growing so fast!”
I’d love to hear from you. Book now or get in touch to talk through your photoshoot.
